Victory Over Nuclear Energy Development

In a major win for people who rely on the Columbia, and Tribal Nations that oppose adding more nuclear waste to the Hanford Nuclear Site, X-energy pulled the plug on a proposal to build small modular nuclear reactors at Hanford. In 2021, Columbia Riverkeeper released an in-depth report and launched a campaign opposing more nuclear energy and waste along the Columbia. Thank you to all of our supporters who spoke up.

Salmon Recovery Advocacy

Columbia Riverkeeper and coalition of organizations are calling on the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife to withdraw a rule change that will result in fewer protections for migratory fish like salmon, steelhead, and lamprey that must swim past barriers like dams and culverts. In an interview with the East Oregonian, Legal Director Miles Johnson explains, “It just invites a political contest every time they [ODFW] make decisions [about fish passage] and frankly those aren’t contests that fish always win.”

Inslee Opposes GTN Pipeline

You spoke up. And Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee listened. On Friday, the Governor announced his opposition to TC Energy’s proposal to increase climate pollution with its proposal to expand the Gas Transmission Northwest (GTN) pipeline. Staff Attorney Audrey Leonard shared, “We are thrilled that Governor Inslee is standing up for communities and climate with his opposition to the GTN Xpress proposal.”

People Deserve Healthy Fish

This month marks one year since the EPA prioritized toxic-pollution cleanup at Bradford Island and surrounding waters of the Columbia River, designating the area a Superfund Site. That decision, spurred by years of advocacy by Tribes, Columbia Riverkeeper, and river communities, was a huge political lift because the polluter, and entity responsible for cleanup, is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Tribes Across the Country Support Yakama Nation to Protect Sacred Site

Last month the National Congress of American Indians announced its support for Yakama Nation and opposition to the proposed Goldendale Pumped Storage Hydroelectric project. The national support comes at a critical time: the Washington Dept. of Ecology is considering key permits for the project.

Partner Spotlight:

On this 12-year anniversary of the Fukushima tragedy, we listen to Laura Feldman, a poet activist, representing the City of Portland on the Oregon Hanford Cleanup Board and Norma Field, author and activist who has followed the Fukushima nuclear disaster from its inception. Exploring the activism efforts of the people impacted by the tragedy, Feldman, and Field discuss the current state of the disaster, what cleanup has been achieved, what are the biggest threats today, and what parallels exist with the effects of radiation pollution at the Hanford Nuclear Site.
