Hanford Art Contest Inspires

Results from the Hanford Art Contest illustrate how artists across the Pacific Northwest are reclaiming Hanford’s nuclear legacy through art. Check out our interview with fourteen-year-old Jazmine Cabaluna from Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada, who won first place with her piece “An Impact on All."

Trump Agencies Fail to Protect Salmon from Extinction

The recently released Final Environmental Impact Statement and Biological Opinion offer no effective solution to protect salmon, orcas, Tribes, and river communities. Trump-led agencies have opted once again for a status quo that dooms iconic salmon, steelhead, and orcas to increased water temperatures, loss of habitat, and starvation.

Solidarity Spotlight: Pumped Storage Development

A pumped-storage energy development threatens irreplaceable tribal cultural resources and wildlife with questionable ability to support regional decarbonization goals affordably and reliably. Columbia Riverkeeper’s Q & A breaks down why environmentalists should stand in solidarity with tribal nations and oppose this so-called “green energy” project.

Comunidades Hiring First Program Director

Comunidades formed in 2018 to bridge the gap between environmental and social justice work in the Columbia River Gorge. With generous support from Northwest foundations, the organization is hiring its first program director to lead community engagement, fund development, and communications efforts. Applications are due September 7.

Take Action:

Save Salmon before it’s too late! If you live in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho, sign our petition by tomorrow, August 20, demanding that Northwest elected officials and the EPA remove Lower Snake River dams before salmon face extinction. Need more background? Watch our latest video.

Say no to mega-dairies! Oregon’s rural communities deserve clean air and water. Tell Oregon officials to adopt a moratorium on mega-dairies and protect rural communities who disproportionately bear the burden of industrial agriculture’s harms. Petición en español.

Clean up Bradford Island! The popular fishing site contains some of the most toxic resident fish in the Pacific Northwest. Located just 30 miles upstream from Portland, its historical and cultural importance is contaminated by 40 years of toxic dumping by the federal government. Join Yakama Nation, Oregon, and Washington to demand that the EPA clean up Bradford Island and add it to the Superfund list.

Tell the Washington Dept. of Ecology to require a full, thorough, environmental study for the Kalama fracked gas-to-methanol refinery.
