Keep Utilities on the Hook

Fracked gas harms our health, our climate, and the Columbia. Years of community activism and public pressure changed the landscape for fracked gas in the Northwest. Community organizing and advocacy are instrumental in stopping major new gas terminals, power plants, and pipelines. Today, we need your help to put public pressure on utilities in Oregon and Washington to phase out of fracked gas.

Fight for a Sacred Site

The Confederated Tribes and Bands of Yakama Nation (Yakama Nation) have opposed the Goldendale Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Development from the start. The development would impact sacred cultural resources. “It’s a really important First Food gathering area,” explains Elaine Harvey, with Yakama Nation Fisheries. “It’s our sacred site. It’s a legendary site for the Yakamas.” Check out the latest in-depth story from the Seattle Times and get involved today.

Comunidades Celebration

Have you heard of Comunidades? The group’s mission is to amplify voices for environmental and social justice while increasing Latina/o/x engagement and leadership in Columbia River Gorge communities. Columbia Riverkeeper is proud to fiscally sponsor Comunidades, which is led by our Senior Community Organizer, Ubaldo Hernández. Learn how Comunidades recently brought people together to celebrate International Immigrants Day.

EPA Issues Permits

The Columbia’s iconic salmon rely on cool, clean water. After years of advocacy by Columbia Riverkeeper, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently issued Clean Water Act permits to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) to reduce discharges of hot water, oil, and toxic chemicals from four aging dams on the Columbia River between Portland, Oregon; and Tri-Cities, Washington.

Leadership News

Columbia Riverkeeper’s Board of Directors announced a new board president, Emily Washines, and the appointment of four new members: Alanna Nagegos, Brett VandenHeuvel, Sue Vosburg, and Marta Yera Cronin. Columbia Riverkeeper’s volunteer Board of Directors oversees the organization’s conservation goals and policies, finances, and public relations.
