New Legal Action Seeks Dam Removal

This summer, Columbia Riverkeeper led a coalition of organizations in sending a formal notice of intent to sue the federal government over salmon-killing dams on the Lower Snake River. Our new legal action alleges that dams violate the Endangered Species Act by creating hot water conditions that kill and injure Endangered Snake River sockeye salmon. We intend to ask a judge for all relief necessary to eliminate the hot water conditions caused by the four Lower Snake River dams, up to and including dam removal.

GTN Xpress Delayed After Explosion

On July 25, a fracked gas pipeline exploded in Virginia. The owner of that pipeline, TC Energy, is seeking permission to build the controversial GTN Xpress fracked gas expansion from Canada to California. After the explosion, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) delayed its decision on GTN Xpress, likely due to concerns about TC Energy's safety record and public pressure. We anticipate that FERC will decide about GTN Xpress this fall.

Salmon in Hot Water

Our friends at Save Our Wild Salmon organize a “Hot Water Report” during the summer months to update activists on warming waters in the Lower Snake and Columbia rivers. The current issue features Miles Johnson, Legal Director for Columbia Riverkeeper, detailing how we use the Clean Water Act to tackle heat pollution from dams and to protect endangered salmon and steelhead from extinction.

Latino Conservation Week Recap

Environmental organizations around the Pacific Northwest held educational and outdoor activities to celebrate Latino Conservation Week. Comunidades and Columbia Riverkeeper partnered with Gorge-based groups on a series of events that encouraged community members to enjoy nature and join forces to protect the environment. Columbia Riverkeeper's Senior Organizer, Ubaldo Hernández, who is also the director of Comunidades, said, “Our Latino population is growing, and it’s important to empower those voices so they can help to weigh the balance in favor of environmental protection.”

Meet Jenna & Theus

We have two amazing interns this summer. Theus Richards is based in Portland and Jenna Boivin is in Hood River. They are testing the water quality to keep you safe and informed via the Swim Guide app. Jenna and Theus share their highlights and hopes for their futures. “I love the joy the river brings to people,” said Jenna. Theus shared, “I'm continually fascinated by the importance of this river as the lifeblood of our region.”

Take Action:

  • Remove Snake River Dams: Comment period now - August 31. Tell Northwest leaders and President Biden to remove Snake River dams, prevent salmon extinction, and honor Tribal rights.

  • Stop Goldendale Pumped Storage: The largest pumped-storage hydroelectric development proposal in the Pacific Northwest threatens irreplaceable tribal cultural and religious resources, fish, and wildlife.

Events and Engagement:

  • Hood to Coast Relay: August 25 - 26, 2023, in Sandy, Oregon. RISE coffee is serving coffee at the Sandy stop. Get a cup and support clean water at the same time, RISE will be accepting donations for Columbia Riverkeeper. Thank you to RISE, and Hood to Coast, for including us in your incredible race! Good luck to the runners.
  • All Our Relations Snake River Campaign: September 23 - October 1, 2023, various locations. Join Se'Si'Le and other Indigenous-led nonprofits on a journey through Washington, Oregon, and Idaho to save the salmon. Four dams on the Lower Snake River must be breached without delay in order to prevent salmon extinction. We must stand together. The health of the river is our collective responsibility.
  • Live Music Benefiting Columbia Riverkeeper: November 17, 2023, at Alberta Rose Theatre, Portland, Oregon. Many talented local musicians will perform music by the late Gordon Lightfoot to celebrate his 85th birthday. In the spirit of Gordan’s life, net proceeds will be donated to Columbia Riverkeeper.
