Climate Victory!

On September 29, Oregon's Land Use Board of Appeals upheld the City of Portland's rules banning new and expanded bulk fossil fuel terminals. Columbia Riverkeeper intervened in all three fossil fuel industry challenges to these rules, spanning seven years. This is a huge win for public safety, clean water, and our climate. Thanks to Crag Law Center for years of pro bono support.

Update: New Superfund Cleanup Site

The federal government is six months past its promised deadline to complete an agreement that will guide cleanup efforts at the Columbia’s newest Superfund site, Bradford Island and surrounding waters. Today, resident fish caught near Bradford Island are unsafe to eat. We need your voice to demand an effective, timely cleanup.

A Place Worth Fighting For

Columbia Riverkeeper’s own staff attorney, Simone Anter, testified before the Washington State Legislature House Environment & Energy Committee, advocating for a timely and thorough cleanup at the Hanford Nuclear Site. The U.S. Dept. of Energy recently rolled out a program to redevelop 30 square miles of Hanford for clean energy development, including small modular nuclear reactors. Simone shared, “Hanford’s contamination is an unsolved problem that threatens clean water for generations. Focusing on that problem is the most important thing we can do right now at Hanford.”

Decision Day on GTN Xpress

Tomorrow the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will likely decide the future of TC Energy’s proposal to significantly increase fracked gas flowing through the interstate GTN Pipeline. Along with the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, six members of Congress, three governors, three attorneys general, and thousands of people, you helped send a powerful message to FERC: our climate cannot afford more fossil fuels. If FERC approves the project, we won’t give up the fight. Get inspired: Read the recent national article on climate justice and GTN by Columbia Riverkeeper Legal Director Miles Johnson.

Partner spotlight: Tom May

Celebrate the extraordinary work of proudly Canadian folk-rock icon and memory-maker Gordon Lightfoot on November 17 in-person or online. On what would have been Gordon’s 85th birthday, singer-songwriter Tom May and friends will perform a full lineup of Gordon’s best-loved music at the Albert Rose Theater. “Sundown: A Salute to Gordon Lightfoot” is sure to stir audience members of every age–the imaginations of the young and the memories of those a bit older. Net proceeds benefit Columbia Riverkeeper.

Take Action:

  • Stop GTN Xpress Pipeline: FERC could meet as soon as October 19, 2023, to vote on the gas pipeline expansion. Last chance to weigh in! Call the White House and ask President Biden to publicly oppose GTN Xpress.
